How much do you know about Hyaluronic Acid?

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Here are some facts about the ingredient you’re seeing everywhere.

Hyaluronic acid is a non-sulphated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) and is composed of repeating polymeric disaccharides of D-glucuronic acid and N-acetyl-D-glucosamine linked by a glucuronidic β (1→3) bond.

It was first discovered in 1934 by Karl Meyer and John Palmer from the vitreous of bovine eyes. In the short period between 1948 and 1951, several chemists started the research to elucidate the structure of this naturally occurring polymer, present in different tissues and liquids of vertebrae animals as well as humans.

Unfortunately, the natural production of hyaluronic acid within our skin decreases as we age, letting lines, wrinkles and rough texture to make their debut.

That’s why so many skincare products incorporate hyaluronic acid in their formulation, with the aim of (re)introducing this important component into the skin.

Hyaluronic acid helps skin stretch and flex and reduces skin wrinkles and lines. Hyaluronic acid is also proven to help wounds heal faster and can reduce scarring.
